CHAPTER TEN

A couple of mornings later we arrived at the dispersal hut. There had been no sign of the Ace Raider or the Ace Assassin in the meantime. We continued to carry out sorties and man the two pursuit planes in the hope of catching either of them on the hop.

“You know,” I said to Angelica, “it’s been too damn quiet recently.”

“I’m happy it’s quiet,” she responded.

“Well, I’m not,” I said. “Usually that means something untoward is about to happen.”

“Oh, don’t be so stuffy, darling,” she laughed.

I was about to discover that my suspicions were well-founded.

“What on earth is going on there?” I exclaimed.

“You mean that plane?” she said.

I was extremely curious to see one of our Spitfires doing circuits at some distance from the airfield. This seemed a little odd. Although our pilots did sometimes take the planes up in order to practice manoeuvres and so on, I wasn’t aware of anyone wanting to do so. I couldn’t quite see the markings to tell me whose plane it might be.

“Let’s go and find out who it is,” I said.

We were about to enter the hut when Willie came out.

“I’m sorry, Scottish,” he said. “I tried to stop him.”

“Tried to stop who?” I asked him, a little nonplussed.

“Jonty,” he replied.

My heart sank, wondering what on earth Jonty could have done now. Willie hesitated, reluctant to continue. In the meantime, Angelica was far more perspicacious. She had taken a look inside the hut and come back out again.

“Kiwi,” she said. “Percy is not in his cage.”

“No,” said Willie, looking suddenly shamefaced.

“Percy?” I said, confused, then, “Kiwi, has Jonty taken that parrot up in his Spitfire?”

Willie nodded.

“I’m afraid so, Scottish.”

“What the deuce is he playing at?” I demanded, to his obvious discomfort.

“He insisted, Scottish. I argued with him, but he insisted that the parrot had to go for a spin…”

“It’s not your fault,” said Angelica, intervening. “You can’t help it that Jonty is such a silly boy sometimes.”

“More than just silly,” I said. “There’ll be absolute hell to pay if Bentley finds out.”

I looked around as I said it, but Bentley was fortunately absent. It would be most inopportune of him to make one of his sudden appearances.

“How long has he been up there?” I asked Willie.

“Oh, about thirty minutes…”

“Thirty minutes? For goodness’ sake!”

The longer he remained in the air, the more he was tempting fate.

“Shall I go and ask Control to get him down?” said Angelica helpfully.

“No, perhaps not. I think he’s coming in for a landing,” I replied, somewhat relieved.

Sure enough, the Spitfire was on its final approach to the airfield.

“All right,” I said to them both. “Let’s just try to keep this quiet if we can. Kiwi, does the rest of the flight know?”

“No, I don’t think they noticed when Jonty slipped out with the parrot,” said Willie.

“I thought you said you tried to stop him,” I replied, wondering how that could have escaped everyone’s notice.

“Oh, nobody bothers when we argue anymore, we do it so often.”

I could well believe it.
